The Mountains Above

Painted en plein air, this watercolor depicts the Grand Teton mountain range rising beyond a foreground of evergreens and late-season grasses. Cool blue layers of distant peaks contrast with the warmer tones of shrubs and sagebrush in the valley below.

Working on location allowed me to respond directly to the shifting light and subtle color changes in the landscape. I was drawn to the contrast between the rugged strength of the mountains and the delicate movement of grasses below. The cool mountain blues set against earthy golds and greens create a sense of calm, space, and fresh mountain air — a moment of stillness held in paint.
